Three Maine CPAs who are leaders in their field have been named 2018 Maine Society of Certified Public Accountants Women to Watch. The awards are given to accomplished women in the accounting profession who also give back through mentorship and community service.

Jodie Heal, Karla Brannen and Patricia Hodgdon will be honored at an awards ceremony on Friday, Nov. 16, at the University of Southern Maine Glickman Library.

Heal, founder of Heal Accounting in the Midcoast area, is treasurer of the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Maine Women’s Network Midcoast Chapter. She also is an advisor for the Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute and a Make-A-Wish wish-granter.

Brannen, tax manager at Albin, Randall & Bennett in Portland, is board president of the MECPA and volunteers with Boys & Girls Club, Buddy Up Animal Society, and the Maine Lab Rescue.

Hodgdon, director of fiduciary services for Dawson, Smith, Purvis & Bassett, P.A. in Portland, gives lectures and leads interactive learning sessions with the firm’s professional staff. She is a longtime volunteer at her church, and her interest in animals led to her involvement in the Coastal Humane Society.

The Women to Watch celebration will be from 4-6 p.m. in the 7th-floor events room. It will be followed by a social hour with cocktails and chocolate tasting.

Also that afternoon, the MECPA is teaming up with the Maine Women’s Network of Androscoggin County for an insightful “Real Women, Real Stories” session called “Passion. Drive. Confidence. You’ve Got It: Now, Show It!” – One-on-One with Julia Kokina.” That event is from 2-4 p.m. in the same space.

Kokina, CPA, Ph.D., is the keynote speaker for the awards event. She is a Babson College accounting educator and researcher and successful small-business owner.

“It’s a great pleasure to recognize and celebrate talented professional people working in Maine, as exemplified by these three inspiring women leaders,” said MECPA Executive Director Trish Brigham.

Both events are open to the public. The fee for the One-on-One talk is $10 but is waived for anyone attending the main event, which is $75 for MECPA members and $100 for non-members and offers one hour of CPE credit.
